The psychedelic indie-rock trio known as The Secret Machines are hoping to release a new album, Ten Silver Drops, in mid-to-late March, according to billboard.com.
This will be the follow-up to 2004’s Now Here is Nowhere, which received critical raves and sold 84,000 copies in the U.S. according to Nielsen Soundscan. The single, “Alone, Jealous and Stoned,” will be released in January in the U.K.
The band receives much of its kick from its powerful drummer, Josh Garza. “Garza’s assault on the skins, much tighter than any Bonham comparisons could possibly describe, gives the album much of its strength and character,” writes Floyd Eberhard of TrouserPress.com
Their music incorporates many influences. At individual moments they can sound like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead or a weird conglomeration of all three.
No matter what their songs sound like, they’re usually pretty long. “It’s funny – it just seems like we can’t write a song shorter than five minutes,” vocalist/bassist Brandon Curtis told billboard.com. “Maybe we’re just long-winded and can’t get to the point.”
Brandon does say that the newer songs are a bit more focused. He adds that many of the new songs, including “A Thousand Seconds” and “All At Once It’s Not Important” will be difficult to reproduce live because of the variety of studio effects they use.
Garth Hudson of The Band even makes a guest appearance on the new disc. He plays accordion on “I Want to Know If Its Still Possible.” Of course, no psychedelic band can just have an accordion on their album. They had to run it though a remodulator to “freak it out.”
Curtis told billboard.com they will begin touring for the new album in March.
