Jones Keeps Up

By: NME News
March 21st 2001 8:53am

STEREOPHONICS singer KELLY JONES says the band have been playing new songs on their current tour of the UK - and fans already know the words to some of the tracks from forthcoming album 'JUST ENOUGH EDUCATION TO PERFORM' thanks to NAPSTER.

But Jones says the band aren't angry, adding: "I've lost three copies of the album myself! It may have been my copy that's been downloaded! But I think that people who are into the band are going to buy the album anyway, even if it's just for the artwork. It's no different to copying albums on cassette like we used to do when we were kids."

Stereophonics'' latest tour has seen them playing nine or ten new tracks from the upcoming album. It is the first time the band have played a tour before the release of an album. 'Just Enough Education To Perform' will be released through V2 on April 9.

Jones also reiterated - after theNME cover story earlier this month - that the band's new single 'Mr Writer' isn't an attack on music journalists. Jones first unveiled the song on an acoustic tour last year, dedicating it to music journalists.

He said: "I think the song's been exaggerated and blown out of proportion. It's just another environment I write about. It's not necessarily about any dig or any journalist, we haven't really had that much in the way of bad press. We had a song and I had the title 'Mr Writer' and I just wrote this cynical, dark little story. It's not about personal jibes. I could even be talking about myself, the fact I keep writing stories about other people."

Jones was speaking to NME.COM on Monday (March 19) at Donington Raceway, where the band unveiled the first part of the bill for band's two massive outdoor shows at Donington and Chepstow Racecourse on July 14 and 21 respectively.

Called 'A Day At The Races', the events are headlined by the Phonics, with support so far from The Black Crowes, Ash and Proud Mary. More acts will be announced over the next few weeks.

Jones added he was interested in getting Turin Brakes to play, but that most of the bands they had approached were asking "too much money", mainly because the traditional outdoor festivals may be in jeopardy because of the continuing foot-and-mouth crisis. Jones said the band's two shows should not be in danger unless the government widens the limitations on outdoor events.
