Iggy Dominates Download Festival

By: Vicky Davidson - Evening Times
June 4th 2004 1:20am

Iggy Pop proved himself the undisputed godfather of rock at the second day of the Download Festival on Glasgow Green.

Playing in the early evening slot, the wrinkled rocker - reunited with his garage-punk outfit the Stooges - put on a powerhouse performance.

He overshadowed headline act Linkin Park and the other bands on the bill, including Machine Head and Welsh rockers Lostprophets.

Iggy threw himself around the stage and showed the young acts how it should be done.

He even had a go at the more manufactured bands on the rock scene, telling the 12,000-strong crowd: "If you live by the machine, you die by the machine. I'm alive!"

Earlier in the set, just before launching into the Stooges' classic track 1969, he told the audience: "We, the Stooges, are happy to be here - heck we're happy to be anywhere!"

The Stooges treated the crowd to two renditions of their incendiary song I Wanna Be Your Dog in the middle of the set, which also included highlights No Fun and Funhouse, and Iggy left the stage the hero of the day.

The bill also included new punk queen Brody Dalle's outfit The Distillers.

Linkin Park delighted fans with their Nu-Metal classics One Step Closer To The End and Fallen.

Despite heavy rain early in the gig, the sky turned a gorgeous flaming red to mark the end of the first ever Download Festival.
