Silverchair Cancels All Concerts

Australian rock band silverchair has been forced to cancel all concert and touring plans for at least a year as the health of singer and guitarist Daniel Johns continues to deteriorate.

Johns, 22, who in recent weeks has been unable to pick up his guitar and on some days can barely walk because of swollen arthritic joints, has been told by his doctors it may be 12 months until he is healthy enough to get on stage again.

The frail star, suffering since December from a rare form of arthritis that usually disappears within three months, was given the short-term prognosis when he visited his specialist on Friday.

Tests revealed Johns was suffering from other complications involving glandular and lymphatic dysfunctions.

Doctors say that he will recover in full but the illness casts doubts about the band's viability at a critical time in its career.
