TORONTO (CP) - The belly-button baring and the barenaked are the top nominees for this year's Juno awards. Newcomer Nelly Furtado and veterans the Barenaked Ladies racked up five Juno nominations apiece Wednesday, topping a list that spanned the history of the Canadian music industry from old-timer Neil Young to teenagers the Moffatts. The diversity in the lineup of stars, from rap to pop to folk, is particularly appropriate considering that this is the 30th anniversary of the Junos, said academy president Daisy Falle. "This is certainly different from the original awards, where I am told the catering was sandwiches made by Mrs. Klees - (Juno co-founder) Stan Klees' mother," Falle said. "And as Anne Murray likes to tell it, all the winners rode home together on the subway." This year's festivities, to be held March 4 at Hamilton's Copps Coliseum, will be hosted by This Hour Has 22 Minutes star Rick Mercer. "Unless something happens with my restraining order on Nelly Furtado, in which case I may be hosting by satellite," Mercer quipped in a pre-recorded video message. Furtado, 22, blasted on to the Canadian music scene in October with the hit song I'm Like A Bird from the album Whoa, Nelly! and has gathered praise from international critics as well. The album got mentioned in year-end polls by TIME and Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone's annual "look back at the year that was" in music. The Victoria native has also appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and as a musical guest on the comedy show Saturday Night Live. Furtado is slated to perform at the Juno gala in Hamilton on March 4. Nominations for the 2001 awards, presented by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, were announced at the CBC's downtown Glenn Gould studio. Furtado was nominated for best single for I'm Like a Bird, best new solo artist, best songwriter and best pop album. Her songs were also nominated in best producer and best recording engineer categories. The Barenaked Ladies, who rose to the top ranks of international pop in 1998 with their chart-busting single One Week, were also nominated in five categories: best single for Pinch Me, best album and best pop album for Maroon, best group and a best songwriter nod for frontmen Ed Robertson and Steve Page. Vancouver's Matthew Good Band, who scored big at last year's Junos, is contesting the best album category with fellow rockers Our Lady Peace, the Barenaked Ladies and the Tragically Hip, as well as pop group soulDecision. "We're definitely happy," said soulDecision's Trevor Guthrie, a Vancouver native. The group's accomplishment in being triple nominees - best single, best album and best group - in their first Juno awards was eclipsed only by Furtado's five. "For us it's like, we've been writing producing and recording for seven years and it feels like we're finally being acknowledged for the work that we've been doing, so we're definitely grateful." SoulDecision will also perform during the gala. Besides Furtado, the Barenaked Ladies and soulDecision, best single nominees were Treble Charger for American Psycho and Jacksoul for Can't Stop. Jann Arden returns as a contender for best female artist, as does country singer Terri Clark. They were nominated alongside Isabelle Boulay, Lara Fabian and Lynda Lemay. Best male artist will pit a diverse group of talents: rock superstar Young against pop singer/rapper Snow, Montreal singer/songwriter Sylvain Cossette, flamenco-folk guitarist Jesse Cook and Quebec chanteur Nicola Ciccone. Best group will be fought out among Blue Rodeo, the Moffatts, soulDecision and the Tragically Hip. In the best country group category, perennial Juno nominees Prairie Oyster are up against the Grammy-nominated Wilkinsons, all-female trios Lace and Farmer's Daughter, and the Johner Brothers. - Nominations in top categories for the 2001 Junos: Best single - American Psycho, Treble Charter; Can't Stop, jacksoul; Faded, soulDecision; I'm Like a Bird, Nelly Furtado; Pinch Me, Barenaked Ladies.
