The More Things Change . . .

Adelaide punks Seraphs Coal are dynamic live and have captured some of that energy on this, their first longplayer. Lacking the instant punch of earlier recordings, The More Things Change . . . grows on you. That said, Seraphs Coal can't be accused of holding back. Masters of stopstart punk, they move easily from melodic anthems to flatout rockers, two guitars giving more depth to the songs. The speed and melody are more remarkable given drummer Dan Jones also handles vocals. Change the World makes good use of horns while avoiding ska, and gives an insight into the band's values (``. . . it's not gonna change the world, but still I've got to try''). Long Distance Call is a highlight, beginning with simple bassline and jangly guitars before moving into a rocking, passionate plea for rediscovering humility. The cutting Problem Solution (``In the name of peace, they'll wage their wars'') and Blood Red Under Blue Skies prove not all bands put the weakest songs last. Part of the proceeds from album sales go to relief agency Tear Australia. Great Aussie rock
