Music Review : Johnson Destined for Long Career

Over the past few years, several alternative rock groups have taken a stab at the mainstream, hoping to be the next REM or Dave Matthews Band.

Most groups have failed, but Jack Johnson may just reverse that trend. Johnson has entered the cruel music world with an outstanding debut album, "Brushfire Fairytales."

On the album, Johnson hides his sub-par vocal talent with his skillful acoustical guitar playing. His lyrics tell stories. Some are serious and some are comedic. All are entertaining.

In the single "Flake," Ben Harper makes a guest appearance playing guitar as Johnson sings about a tangled love affair. The single is faster-paced than most of the tracks and shows off Johnson's lyrical genius. While this song is the CD's high point, it doesn't overshadow great hits like "Middle Man," "Fortunate Fool" and "Inaudible Melodies," which all have soothing beats and rhythms that make the listener want more.

Just listening to Johnson play the guitar and sing is relaxing. For fans of Harper and David Grey, this CD is a must.

I have a feeling we'll be hearing more from Johnson. I just wish his first CD was longer.
